World Press Freedom Day (3 May 2017)

On this World Press Freedom Day, France reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the freedom of the press and freedom of expression throughout the world.

Media pluralism, the right to inform and be informed, and the ability to express critical points of view are vital to democratic debate. Journalists and all media personnel play a crucial role. The exercise of their profession makes it possible to defend this fundamental freedom.

France is mobilized within the UN framework in support of that freedom, the protection of journalists, and the fight against the impunity of those who undermine them. It calls for the full implementation of Security Council resolution 2222 adopted on May 27, 2015, on the protection of journalists in armed conflict.

In this regard, our permanent delegation in New York will co-chair a meeting today on female journalists in armed conflicts.

Report by “Reporters without Borders” (26 April 2017)

France expresses its concern following the publication on April 26 by “Reporters without Borders” of its report on the freedom of the press, which indicates an alarming deterioration in the situation around the world.

In a context in which propaganda, rumors and fake news spread rapidly, freedom of the press has never been so critical. The duty to inform is more important than ever. The protection of journalists is therefore an imperative.

That is why the defense of fundamental freedoms, especially the freedom of expression and the freedom of the press, is a priority for our foreign policy. We remain committed, notably at the UN, to ensuring the protection of journalists.
