Women Journalists and Freedom of Expression – challenges in the Americas
The Permanent Mission of France to the OAS, the Canadian Mission to the OAS, the Embassy of Switzerland and the Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the IACHR will be celebrating the Month of Francophonie and the International Women’s Week with a Webinar focusing on "Women journalists and Freedom of Expression : challenges in the Americas".
Launched by OAS Secretary General Almagro, this webinar will be introduced by Ambassador Anne de la Blache (Permanent Observer of France to the OAS), Ambassador Hugh Adsett (Permanent Representative of Canada to the OAS) and Ambassador Jacques Pitteloud (Ambassador of Switzerland to the US and Observer to the OAS
A panel moderated by Pedro Vaca, IACHR’s Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression will give the opportunity to high level journalists and writers from different countries, including French author Laurence Debray, to discuss Freedom of Expression in the Americas from a woman’s perspective. The conversation will focus on the challenges and risks faced by women journalists in the region, especially in crisis situations but also the opportunities and achievements they meet.
The increase in acts of violence against women journalists – including murders, sexual violence, online violence and increasing occurrences of criminal prosecution of women denouncing violence against women are of a particular concern.
Mrs. Jennifer Clement, famous and multiple-award winning writer, President of PEN International, will share with us her vision of Women and Freedom of expression in the Americas. Commissioner Joel Hernandez, President of the IACHR will then present the conclusions of the webinar.
The webinar will take place online Friday, March 12, from 11:00 to 1:00 (ET-USA): Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in three languages: French, English and Spanish. Please find attached the program with all details.
