International Human Rights Day (10 December 2017)
On the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, France reaffirms its resolute and unwavering commitment to ensuring respect for fundamental rights all over the world.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights reaffirms that these rights belong to all human beings “without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.”
France strives to promote the universality of human rights and their effectiveness. This is one of the priorities of its foreign policy. It is committed to the universal abolition of the death penalty, the fight against impunity, the fight against torture, arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances, the fight against discrimination and violence to women, the protection of the rights of the child and the fight against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
On this occasion, the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs as well as Paris City Hall is partnering with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to officially launch the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This should make it possible to highlight the importance and relevance of this fundamental text throughout 2018.
