International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict (19 June 2017)

On this International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, France reaffirms its commitment to combating this scourge.

Since 1998, more than 200,000 people have been the victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo alone; Daesh and Boko Haram also engage systematically in these abhorrent practices. In December 2016, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2331, which recognizes that sexual and sexist violence committed in periods of conflict are an integral part of the ideology of terrorist groups.

France is committed to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. It supports the efforts of the UN Secretary General’s special representative in charge of combating sexual violence in conflicts as well as the naming of counselors in charge of women’s protection in peacekeeping operations.

We are also committed to taking sexual violence into account in humanitarian efforts and development policies through the Gender and Development Strategy 2013-2017.
