Chile – Meeting between Jean-Yves Le Drian and his counterpart (Paris, 18 July 2018)

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, is receiving Roberto Ampuero, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, today, during his first visit to France within the framework of his current role.

Chile is an important partner of France in Latin America, with which we share values and engage in high-quality bilateral exchanges. This will be the first meeting between the Chilean minister of foreign affairs and the French minister of foreign affairs and will provide an opportunity to initiate our political dialogue with the new Chilean government.

The discussions will focus in particular on our trade, since Chile was our second largest client in South America, after Brazil, in 2017. Indeed, France plays a visible economic role in Chile, notably in growth sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure and transport. The development of our relations in the areas of defense and academic and scientific cooperation, with special emphasis on innovation, will also be on the agenda.

Following the EU-CELAC summit, Jean-Yves Le Drian and Roberto Ampuero will also discuss regional issues such as the forthcoming Pacific Alliance summit from July 22 to 24, the situation in Nicaragua and Venezuela. Lastly, this meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss major international issues of mutual interest, especially our shared commitment to the fight against climate change.
