Egypt - Death sentences
France is extremely concerned by reports that 683 new death sentences have been handed down by the court of first instance in Minya in Egypt. This verdict follows the confirmation of 37 similar sentences handed down on March 24.
Like the high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy and the UN high commissioner for human rights, we again call on the Egyptian authorities to ensure that the defendants receive a fair trial that is based on an independent investigation and respects the rights of the defense, in accordance with international standards and the provisions of the Egyptian constitution.
France reaffirms its opposition to the death penalty.
